TROOPSHIPS

The Matrix Troopships Utility originated with a post to the CEFSG Forum by Al C entitled "Absorbed and Broken up Battalions -- Transport Ships". The initial list was subsequently augmented with an additional list from the "RegimentalRouge", posts by "Ken MacLean" and others resulting in the inclusion of Medical, Artillery and Other units and the subdivision of the original list. In January 2009, two new subdivisions were added: one for the drafts from Depot Battalions and the other containing brief descriptions of the ships used to carry CEF members.

PLEASE check the Spreadsheet Folder for the most up-to-date version of all of Al's Excel files, as they are posted there when received. The HTML versions on the web pages may not be the most up-to-date versions available. If you want to check these against earlier versions, please check the files in the Archive Folder.

September 18, 2011: Computer hardware changes on many servers has eliminated to ability to post links directly to files. You will need to go to the CEFSG Forum topic (page 4 or thereabouts) to see how to access these files by typing the actual file name after the main link:

If you have additional information on ship movement, embarkation dates, corrections, etc., you may send those directly to Al Craig via the CEFSG Private Message (PM link) or by copying this spam resistant e-mail address into your message:

Al reported that well over 60% of the ship's named and dates recorded in the original list were gleaned from the Matrix, the CEFSG Forum, the web pages of CEFSG members, and contributions by members of this forum to the other place (GWF). The remaining 40% were found on internet pages. Later entries were drawn from the service records of individual soldiers, unit war diaries and embarkation rolls. Beginning in January 2008 CEFSG member "lancer" began contributing entries derived from his collection of CEF embarkation rolls and administrative histories greatly enhancing the range of units covered and the accuracy of the list in total.

The list that is posted at present is the most up-to-date list that has been posted to the web site at the date shown above. Check the Excel file folders for the most recent updates if they are not shown on the unit pages. Follow these links to the Utility sub-sections:

Infantry Battalions

NOTE:

Users should keep the following cautions in mind:

This is a provisional list that is updated when new information becomes available.
There is no guarantee that an individual soldier sailed with the main body of his battalion.
Dates in the column headed "Arrived on" could be the date the ship arrived in port or the date troops disembarked from the ship. This is necessary because the available sources often use these dates interchangeably; where both dates are known the "Disembarked" date has been used.
Much of this is drawn from secondary sources and should be treated accordingly.

This information was provided to the Matrix for posting and other than reformatting the date it has not been organized or updated from the format received. At any time a correction or update is required, the Matrix presumes that the original authors will make the necessary changes and forward the revised spreadsheet. Upon receipt, the new spreadsheet will be loaded to this page and as the "downloadable" spreadsheet (see below).

The Matrix has added a sub-directory where this and other lists are stored in their original Microsoft Excel format. RegimentalRogue's list, which is not posted here, is available for download as an Excel spreadsheet, and shows the original commanding officer, strength of the unit, time of sailing and H.Q. at the time. The source of that information is given by Mike as "Canada at War; A Record of Heroism and Achievement; 1914-1918, by J. Castell Hopkins, F.S.S., F.R.G.S.".

To see that complete list check the T2 Tropship Spreadsheets on MediaFire
