Background:
| As described in the Navigation Chart, the units
that were not part of a Divisional Command in the Army Corps,
but rather took their instructions from the Army HQ could be
classified by three (3) levels of "Echelons".
The "Third Echelon", as described by Love(2),
referred to:
"units and transport that remained more or less
permanently in the rear of the fighting lines, such as base
camps, depots, most hospitals, etc.".
Only some components of this group are shown by Nicholson(1)
in his summary chart in Appendix B (page 544), as he clarifies
in his text that he was primarily dealing with units that saw
action. |
