Background:
The following background to the Pioneer
Battalions is provided from a collection of postings to the
CEFSG Forum: FORUM
POSTS. That information has now been moved
to the individual battalion pages as noted in the header to this
page.
Bill Alexander noted that there should be a separate category for Pioneer
Battalions in the Matrix. They were under a separate organization until March
1918. The battalions involved were: No 1 Canadian Pioneer Bn, No 2 Canadian Pioneer Bn, No 3
Canadian Pioneer Bn, No 4 Canadian Pioneer Bn, No 5 Canadian
Pioneer Bn, 107th Pioneer Bn, 123 Pioneer Bn, 124 Pioneer Bn.
Note that although some references make mention of the 67th
Pioneer Battalion, that unit was redesignated as the 4th Pioneer
Battalion.
Stewart suggests that the pioneers provide essentially the
same duties as the engineers, working closely with the engineers
to maintain lines of communication. The only Pioneer
Battalion that did not reorganize into the Engineers in 1917 was
the 1st Pioneer Battalion, which instead converted to a Railway
Troop.
Library and Archives Canada has holdings for the Pioneer
Battalions but unfortunately that information is not
on-line. What is available is listed here:
A separate section was created for the
Pioneer Battalions on the Matrix Section of the CEFSG Forum
which is located here: PIONEER
BATTALIONS. If one of the members with detailed
knowledge on the Pioneers wishes to write up a summary page, I
would be pleased to insert it here into the Matrix.
Patch Note
Bookmark: There is no distinguishing patch for the Canadian
Pioneers in the Matrix Patch Utility, however there is
one exhibited in Clive Laws book on "Distinguishing Patches
(2nd ed.)" on page 6. This shows the standard C.E.
(Canadian Engineers) patch on the square Divisional Patch, with
a triangle above that patch indicating the pioneer unit.
