Background:

Information on the 73rd Battalion was provided by CEF Study Group members via postings to the Forum:

Chris Wight Forum posting: 73rd Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada

came across this site, link from a chance glance through the Black Watch's (Montreal) Forum.

This book of photos, probably done in 1916, is comprised of photos of the original enlistees of the Battalion. Photos of Officers are listed by Company while those of N.C.O.s are done by Company and Platoon.

There is also a platoon photo, link which I believe is of No. 13 Platoon.

An additional bonus is the personal war diary, link, of Pte. Clarence John Ross who was killed at Vimy, link.

The webmaster, Don Ross (his grandfather was Pte. Ross' brother), deserves a pat on the back for making this rare book available via the internet

Chris Wight reported to the Forum that the 73rd was a Quebec Battalions that was dropped from the order of battle because Quebec simply could not recruit enough men to fill the ranks of their existing Battalions. The 73rd suffered heavy casualties during Vimy and were replaced by Nova Scotia's 85th Battalion.

Dropping a battle tested unit was not popular so when several other Provinces hit the wall when it came to recruiting replacements, the Battalion was retained but its affiliated Province was changed. These Battalions were Manitoba's 44th which became affiliated with New Brunswick (August 1918) and the following British Columbia Battalions: 47th became affiliated with Western Ontario (February 1918); 54th and 102nd became affiliated with Central Ontario (August 1917).
