Background:
| Stewart reports that the battalion was
reorganized in Canada on December 20, 1916 as a Draft Depot for
the Machine Gun Corps.
Ken Sheffler's web site for the nominal roll of the 205th
Battalion states the following:
The 205th (Tiger) Battalion was organized and recruited
in Hamilton, Ontario beginning in late February 1916. By this
time, recruiting had begun to fall off in the city, and it was
hoped that by forming a battalion named after the city's
esteemed Tigers athletic club would rectify this problem.
However, after an initial spurt of interest, recruiting
dropped off considerably. By the time the battalion was sent
to Camp Borden during the summer, it was still significantly under strength.
The unit returned to Hamilton in the autumn and was evidently
redesignated a "machine gun battalion" a short while
later. Nothing much came of this, however, and several months
later the unit was broken up for drafts. One company was
transferred to 164th Battalion which was recruiting
neighbouring Halton County.
