Background:

Stewart reports that the 178th Infantry Battalion "Canadien Français" was organized in Victoriaville, Quebec in 1916.  Meek reports that the unit was organized Military Districts 4 & 5 and Eastern Ontario. The battalion was reported to have arrived in England on March 16, 1917, where it was absorbed into the 10th Reserve Battalion.  Love reports that the 10th Reserve Battalion reinforced the 22nd Battalion in France.

See also the 233rd Infantry Battalion which was absorbed by the 178th Infantry Battalion after a number of casualties in a train wreck in Canada.

From Tighe McManus's post on the Forum:

The 233rd was authorized on 15 Jul 1916, however they began recruiting on 27 Mar 1916. On 8 Feb 1917, the Battalion of 300 men was proceeding east by train from Edmonton when the train went off the tracks near Winnipeg, injuring at least 35 soldiers. Due to its small size the 233rd was absorbed by the 178th Battalion. The 178th with a strength of 20 Officers and 415 Other Ranks sailed for England on 4 Mar 1917 and was absorbed into the 10th Reserve Battalion.

Nicholson does not report on either the 178th or the 233rd Infantry Battalions, nor are there any reports on the Library and Archives Canada web site.
