Background:

Important Note:You will note that there is an "extra battalion" in the list of Sub-Components that follows. The 85th Infantry Battalion joined the 12th Brigade in April 1917, after the 73rd Infantry Battalion was broken up after devastating loses at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. The 78th Battalion moved up to take the position of the 73rd and the 85th was brought into the 12th Brigade to fill the void. As such, the 75th Battalion took over the position and patch of the 73rd Battalion and surrendered their patch and position to the newly formed 85th.

Library and Archives Canada Textual Records:

The 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade was established as part of the 4th Canadian Division in January 1916. The brigade was initially composed of the 38th, 72nd, 73rd, and 78th Battalions. In December 1916 the 73rd Battalion was replaced by the 85th Battalion. The brigade was commanded successively by Colonel F.O.W. Loomis (January 1916 to March 1916), and Brigadier-Generals Lord Brooke (May 1916 to September 1916), J.H. MacBrien (September 1916 to December 1918), and J. Kirkcaldy (December 1918 to June 1919). The 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade was demobilized in June 1919.
